What numerology is (and is not)
Numerology is a symbolic system that links numbers with personality themes and life lessons. The version most people in the US and UK know goes back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and was shaped into its modern form in the 20th century. It is a tool for reflection and storytelling, not a scientific prediction method.
Used with a sense of humor, it works well as a conversation starter: what does my number say about how I handle change?
How to calculate your life path number
Write out your full birth date, add every digit together, then keep adding until you reach a single digit. The exceptions are 11, 22 and 33, called master numbers: if your total lands on one of them, you stop there.
Example: December 19, 1987 becomes 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38. Then 3 + 8 = 11. That is a master number, so this life path is 11. A second example: March 8, 1987 is 3 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 36, and 3 + 6 = 9.
The numbers at a glance
- 1: initiative and independence
- 2: partnership and sensitivity
- 3: expression and creativity
- 4: structure and reliability
- 5: change and freedom
- 6: care and responsibility
- 7: reflection and inquiry
- 8: ambition and results
- 9: compassion and completion
- 11, 22, 33: master numbers with a heightened theme of intuition, building and service
Beyond the life path
Numerology also looks at your name, using a letter-to-number chart (the Pythagorean system assigns A=1 through I=9, then starts again). The expression, soul urge and personality numbers explore different layers of who you are. Some practitioners, especially in the UK, use the Chaldean system instead, which gives slightly different results.
HiHaVy treats all of this as symbolism. It is meant to be a mirror, not a map you have to follow.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my life path number?
Add every digit of your birth date (month, day and full year) and reduce the total to a single digit, unless you reach 11, 22 or 33. For example, 12/19/1987 gives 38, then 11.
What are master numbers in numerology?
11, 22 and 33 are double-digit numbers that are not reduced. They are considered to carry a stronger version of the number they reduce to (2, 4 and 6), along with higher expectations. Many people find them a demanding but inspiring description.
Is numerology real?
There is no scientific evidence that numbers determine personality or fate. People enjoy numerology as a reflective practice, much like journaling prompts. Treat it as inspiration, not instruction.
Does the date format matter, like month first or day first?
No. Addition gives the same result whether you write 12/19/1987 or 19/12/1987, so US and UK date styles lead to the same life path number.
