How the zodiac works

Western astrology divides the Sun’s yearly path into twelve 30° sections. Each sign belongs to an element (fire, earth, air or water) which colors how it expresses itself, and to a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) that describes how it handles change.

The system used on HiHaVy is the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons: Aries begins at the spring equinox in March. It is the version you will see in most newspapers, apps and horoscope columns in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Sun, Moon and Rising: the Big Three

Your sun sign is the headline, but astrologers often talk about the Big Three. The sun sign is your core identity. The moon sign, set by where the Moon was at birth, describes your emotional world. The rising sign, or ascendant, based on the exact time and place of birth, shapes first impressions.

How do I know my zodiac sign?

Find the date range that contains your birthday. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign, the exact time and place of birth decide it, because the Sun changes signs at a slightly different moment each year.

What is a cusp sign?

People born within a day or two of a sign change are sometimes called cusp babies. Astrologically you still belong to one sign, but you may relate to the traits of the neighboring one. A birth chart can tell you which.

Is there a 13th zodiac sign, Ophiuchus?

Ophiuchus is a real constellation the Sun passes through, but Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac with twelve equal signs tied to the seasons, not to constellation boundaries. So Ophiuchus is a fun astronomy fact, not a thirteenth sign.

Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
