What amber is
Amber began as sticky resin from ancient trees. Over millions of years it hardened and fossilized, so it is an organic gem rather than a crystal. The Baltic region is the most famous source. Sometimes amber traps insects, plant fragments or bubbles, and these inclusions are admired by collectors.
What it is traditionally associated with
In crystal culture and folk tradition, amber is linked with warmth, patience, optimism and the solar plexus chakra. Beads have been worn in many cultures as charms. These are cultural meanings and personal habits, not proven effects, and amber necklaces are not a medical treatment. There is no evidence that teething necklaces help babies, and they pose a choking and strangulation risk, so please do not put them on infants or young children.
Everyday ways to use it
- Wear a bead bracelet or pendant for a bit of warm color.
- Place a polished piece on your desk as a calm, sunny accent.
- Hold it when you want to slow down and be patient.
- Display a piece with an inclusion as a conversation starter.
Care and cleaning
Amber is soft and easily scratched. Clean it with a damp soft cloth and mild soap, then dry well. Keep it away from alcohol, perfume, hairspray, acetone and heat, since they can cloud or crack the surface. Put your jewelry on after makeup and sprays, and store amber on its own in a soft pouch.
Real or fake?
Amber is commonly imitated by copal, which is much younger resin, as well as by plastic and glass. Genuine Baltic amber floats in a strong salt-water solution, while many fakes sink, though copal can float too. Hot-needle or solvent tests can damage a piece, so avoid them. The safest approach is to buy from a trusted seller and ask about origin and treatments.
Pairing with other stones
Amber looks natural beside jet for a classic dark-and-gold pairing, or beside citrine and carnelian in a warm, sunny set.
Questions people ask
Is amber a stone?
Not strictly. It is fossilized tree resin, which makes it an organic gem.
Does amber float?
In strongly salted water real amber floats, but this test is not conclusive on its own.
What is copal?
A younger tree resin that is often sold as amber. It is softer and less fossilized.
Can I wear amber in the shower?
It is better not to, since water, soap and heat can dull it over time.
