What coral is
Gem coral is the skeleton of colonial marine animals. Precious red coral, from the genus Corallium, grows slowly in deep water and has been used for beads, cabochons and carvings since antiquity. Because it is organic and made of calcium carbonate, it is soft and reacts to acids.
What it is traditionally associated with
In many cultures, red coral has been worn as a charm for protection and vitality, and in crystal culture it is linked with the root or sacral chakra. These meanings come from tradition and symbolism. They are not proven effects.
Ethics and sourcing
Coral reefs are declining worldwide, and some coral species are protected under international trade rules such as CITES. Harvesting also damages slow-growing habitats. If you love the look, consider choosing vintage or inherited pieces, items with clear legal documentation, or alternatives such as glass, resin or red stones that are labeled honestly. We do not recommend encouraging new harvesting.
Everyday ways to use it
- Wear an inherited coral bead necklace on special occasions.
- Keep a small vintage cabochon in a jewelry dish.
- Choose a red stone such as carnelian for a similar color when you prefer a mineral.
- Display a piece of coral-colored decor to remember the ocean.
Care and cleaning
Coral is soft and sensitive to acids, perfume, vinegar, chlorine and sweat. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth, dry immediately, and put it on last when dressing. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners. Store it separately in a soft pouch.
Real or fake?
Plastic, glass, dyed bamboo coral and dyed marble are common imitations. Natural coral shows fine parallel lines or small patterns along its length, while plastic looks uniform. Because genuine coral may involve legal restrictions, ask for documentation and buy only from reputable sellers.
Questions people ask
Is coral a crystal?
No. It is an organic material formed by marine animals, mostly calcium carbonate.
Is it okay to buy coral?
Vintage or legally documented pieces are the more responsible choice, and alternatives exist.

A quick wipe is fine, but avoid soaking, perfume, vinegar and chlorine.
What stone looks like red coral?
Carnelian and red jasper have similar warm tones without harming reefs.
