Twelve new moons and twelve full moons are listed in the table below, each with its exact time. Use the notes here to read the table and to get more out of the year ahead.
Times shown in New York time (ET).
Start by finding the full moons that land on weekends or holidays, since those are the nights most people are free to look up. Add them to your phone calendar now and the year stops sneaking up on you.
New moon nights are the opposite case. With no moonlight washing out the sky, they are the best dates of the month for stargazing, meteor showers and the Milky Way, as long as you can get away from city lights.
The table shows both the date and the exact moment each phase is reached. A full moon is technically a single instant, but it looks full to the eye the night before and the night after too, so you never have to be precise to enjoy it.
The Moon reaches each phase at one moment for the whole planet, but clocks differ. A full moon at 11 p.m. in New York is already the next calendar day in London, and even later in Sydney.
The times in the table are shown for the main time zone of this site, so if you live somewhere else, add or subtract the difference. Near midnight the date itself can shift by a day, which is why two websites can both be right and still list different dates.
The names in the table are the traditional North American ones, popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac and partly drawn from Native American and early colonial sources. They describe the season more than the Moon itself, so a Strawberry Moon is about the berry harvest, not the color of the sky.
2027 has twelve full moons and no Blue Moon, because no calendar month gets two of them. The September full moon is the one closest to the autumn equinox, so it takes the Harvest Moon name this year, and October's becomes the Hunter's Moon. In some other years it is the other way around.
There is also a total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027, visible along a path across Spain, North Africa and the Middle East. Elsewhere it appears as a partial eclipse at most, or not at all, so check a local source before planning a trip.
For photos, the best light is often the night before the full moon, when it rises while the sky still has some glow and a sliver of shading remains along one edge. Use a tripod, a low ISO and a telephoto lens if you have one, and plan around a clear horizon.
Gardeners have long planted by the Moon, sowing leafy crops as it waxes and root crops as it wanes. This is folklore, handed down in almanacs, and studies have not found a reliable effect. It does make a pleasant routine, though, and keeps you checking on the garden.
Many people also use the new moon to set a few intentions and the full moon to look back on the month. That is a modern practice, not a science, and it works mainly as a regular prompt to slow down and write things down.
Twelve, one in each calendar month. None of the months has two, so there is no Blue Moon in 2027.
Usually it is a time zone difference. The Moon is full at one instant worldwide, but when that instant falls close to midnight it can land on different calendar days in different places.
The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. In 2027 that is the September full moon, which the table lists under that name.
The night before the full moon is a favorite, because the Moon rises in a softly lit sky. Quarter moons also work well since the shadows along the terminator show crater detail.
