Year of the Tiger: courage with charisma

King of the forest

The Chinese character 王 (king) is traditionally said to be seen in the pattern on a tiger’s forehead. The animal symbolizes courage, protection and strength, and it is traditional to place tiger imagery on children’s clothing and shoes as a symbol of bravery and protection.

That is the Tiger’s reputation: brave and bold, with a protective streak for those they care about.

Personality

• Courageous and not afraid to stand up for people.
• Charismatic: a natural presence in a room.
• Independent and adventurous.
• Generous and warm with loved ones.

Growth edges

A Tiger can act first and think second, which sometimes means impulsive decisions or bruised feelings. A short pause before the big move is the Tiger’s best friend. They can also resist authority, which is a strength until it becomes a habit. Learning when to collaborate turns a lone hunter into a leader.

Love and friendship

Tigers love intensely and honestly, and want a partner who can match their energy. Traditional compatibility lore pairs Tiger with Horse and Dog (the harmony triangle) and with Pig. Monkey is traditionally seen as a clash, though a good sense of humor works wonders on any chart.

Work

Entrepreneurship, sports, the military, emergency services, advocacy, performing arts and management suit the Tiger. They like a challenge and room to lead. Tigers tend to be at their best in a crisis, which is great for the team, though it helps to avoid manufacturing drama when things are calm. A coach, a sport or a creative outlet gives that energy somewhere healthy to go.

Check your year

Remember that the Chinese zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year. A birthday in January or early February could mean you are the previous year’s animal.
