The Rabbit, or the Cat?

In China, Japan and Korea the fourth animal is the Rabbit, and in the West it is usually called by that name too. In Vietnam, it is the Cat instead, which tells you something about how one idea travels and changes. There is also a sweet legend that the Moon has a rabbit pounding elixir in it, which is why the Rabbit is linked with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Rabbit is a symbol of gentleness, longevity and good fortune.

Personality

  • Diplomatic: skilled at smoothing tension and finding common ground.
  • Refined, with a love of beauty, comfort and calm spaces.
  • Kind and considerate, often a trusted friend.
  • Cautious: they prefer to think before leaping.

Growth edges

A Rabbit can avoid conflict until things pile up. Practicing the honest, kind sentence early keeps small issues small. They may also hold back from risks. Taking a small, safe step toward the big thing (a short course, a coffee with someone who does the job) builds courage gradually.

Love and friendship

Rabbits are affectionate, attentive partners who thrive in peaceful relationships. Traditional lore pairs Rabbit with Goat and Pig (the harmony triangle) and with Dog. Rooster is traditionally described as a clash, but any pair can find a rhythm with patience.

Work

Design, diplomacy, law, counseling, teaching, writing and the arts suit the Rabbit. They do well in environments that are collaborative and low on shouting.

Check your year

Because the Rabbit year starts with Lunar New Year rather than on January 1, people born in January or early February often turn out to be Tigers. Look up the new-year date for your birth year to be sure.
